Canggu for Founders: The Neighbourhood Guide to Bali's Tech Hub
Canggu is where Bali's tech scene lives. Here's the insider guide to the co-working spaces, cafes, event venues, and neighbourhoods that founders actually use. No tourist fluff.
Canggu for Founders
Canggu is a 10km stretch of coastline in southwest Bali that has quietly become one of the most concentrated tech founder communities in the world. Here's what you need to know if you're building here.
Co-Working Spaces
Outpost
Best for: Serious builders who want a professional environment. Multiple locations in Canggu. Meeting rooms, podcast studios, fast WiFi (150+ Mbps), and a community of tech-focused members. Monthly desk from ~$150.
Dojo
Best for: Creative founders and first-time Bali visitors. Central Canggu location. Great atmosphere, good food, regular events. More social than Outpost. Monthly from ~$120.
Other Options
- B-Work: Quieter, good for deep focus
- Tropical Nomad: Budget-friendly, decent WiFi
- Private villas with dedicated office space: Many founders rent villas with a separate room as their office ($800-1,500/month all-in)
Cafes with Good WiFi
Every founder has their cafe rotation. The reliable ones:
- Crate Cafe: Solid WiFi, good coffee, lots of founders. Gets busy after 10am.
- Sensorium: Excellent coffee, fast WiFi, less crowded than Crate.
- Machinery: Strong WiFi, power outlets at every table, good for longer sessions.
- The Loft: Upstairs seating with ocean views. WiFi is decent, not amazing.
Pro tip: Always carry a mobile hotspot as backup. Telkomsel or XL prepaid SIM with a data package costs $10-15/month and works as a reliable failsafe.
Event Venues
- Yema Kitchen: Home of BSTC's monthly Networking Night. Good acoustics, flexible space, great food. Canggu's default tech event venue.
- Seoul Seoul Project: Korean-fusion restaurant that hosts BSTC's "How I Build with AI" series. Modern vibe, good AV setup.
- Outpost event space: Available for community events. Professional setup with projector and sound.
Where to Live
Canggu is roughly divided into a few areas:
Batu Bolong / Echo Beach
The heart of Canggu. Walking distance to most co-working spaces and cafes. More expensive ($600-1,200/month for a villa) but the convenience is worth it for most founders.
Berawa
Slightly south of Batu Bolong. Quieter, newer developments, good restaurants. Popular with founders who want less noise. $500-1,000/month.
Pererenan
North of Echo Beach. Even quieter, surrounded by rice fields. Best for founders who want deep focus during the day and don't mind a 10-minute scooter ride to central Canggu. $400-800/month.
Getting Around
- Scooter: The default. Rent monthly for $50-70. Essential for Canggu life.
- Grab/Gojek: Available but can be slow in Canggu. Better for longer trips to Seminyak, Ubud, or the airport.
- Walking: Possible in central Batu Bolong but limited. Canggu is spread out.
The Community Layer
This is what makes Canggu different from other digital nomad destinations. The tech community here is organised and active.
- BSTC events (monthly networking, How I AI, hackathons) are the anchor
- Informal founder dinners happen weekly at various restaurants
- Co-working space events add another layer of connection
- WhatsApp groups keep the community connected between events
The concentration of founders per square kilometre is what makes it work. In a city like London or SF, you might go weeks without bumping into another founder. In Canggu, you'll see them at every cafe, every co-working space, and every event.
Practical Tips
- Get a local SIM immediately. Telkomsel has the best coverage. Data is cheap.
- Set up a local bank account if staying long-term. BCA or Mandiri for daily expenses.
- Join BSTC's WhatsApp on day one. It's how the community communicates.
- Explore beyond Canggu. Ubud (1 hour north) is quieter and cheaper. Sanur (45 min east) has a different vibe. Both have small tech communities.
- Rainy season (Nov-Mar) brings afternoon downpours but mornings are usually clear. Dry season (Apr-Oct) is the best weather.
Join the BSTC community to plug into Canggu's tech scene from day one.
