Digital nomad community in Bali for people building a business

Lachlan McRitchieOctober 26, 2026

Bali has plenty of digital nomad groups, but most are social chats. If you're building a business rather than just travelling, here's where the builders actually meet, what to look for in a community, and how to set yourself up.

Digital nomad community in Bali for people building a business

If you're in Bali to build a business rather than just travel, look past the big nomad chats and go where builders meet in person. Most Bali nomad groups are social Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook chats. The builder communities are smaller and meet on a schedule: in Canggu in late 2026 that means BSTC's weekly How I AI night (Wednesdays, 4 November to 9 December) and its monthly founder dinner, plus developer meetups like GDG Bali in Denpasar.

Both kinds of community are useful. They're just useful for different things. A social group finds you a scooter, a flatmate or a surf buddy. A builder community finds you a developer, a first customer, an honest read on your pricing, and people at your stage who'll still be answering your messages after you've left the island.

Two kinds of nomad community

Social nomad groups. Freaking Nomads' Bali directory lists 18 groups. The ones shown on its first page are almost all Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Reddit groups tagged "Digital Nomads" and "Social", with one tagged Web3 and one for car rentals (Freaking Nomads, checked 25 Oct 2026). Nomads.com lists 51 past Canggu meetups (coffees, drinks, coworking days and the like), but its most recent was a coffee on 25 March 2026 with five people, and the page said "No upcoming meetups in Canggu yet" (Nomads.com Canggu meetups, checked 25 Oct 2026).

Builder communities. These meet in person on a schedule and the conversation is about what people are building. The ones with dated events in 2026:

  • Bali Start-ups and Tech Community (BSTC), Canggu. Weekly How I AI nights and a roughly monthly networking drinks and dinner. 2,700+ members on Meetup, rated 4.7 from 155 ratings, 54 past Meetup events (Meetup, checked 25 Oct 2026). Hosted by Josh Morrow and Lachlan McRitchie.
  • GDG Bali, Denpasar. Developer meetups and AI workshops; last listed meetup 19 July 2026 (GDG Bali, checked 25 Oct 2026).
  • Ubud Tech Meetup, Ubud. Last Tuesday of the month; last listed event 30 June 2026 (Luma, checked 25 Oct 2026).

Several others (Startup Grind Bali, AI Tinkerers Canggu, Build Club Bali) had no recent dated event when we checked. The full list, with the last event we could find for each, is in startup and tech communities in Bali.

What a builder actually needs from a community

When you're building, a community earns its place if it gives you these. Use them to judge any group, ours included.

  1. People at your stage. A room where someone has already solved the problem you have this month: first hire, first price rise, first churned customer.
  2. Real numbers. You learn more from someone sharing what their AI tool actually costs and earns than from a keynote. BSTC's How I AI opens with a one-minute round where people share what they shipped that week (event page).
  3. A rhythm. Weekly or monthly events you can return to. Relationships come from repetition, not from one big night.
  4. No pitching. If every conversation turns into a sales pitch, people stop coming. BSTC's rules are no hard selling and 60-second intros max (event page).
  5. Local knowledge. Visas, company setup, banking and hiring in Indonesia change often. A community is where you hear what's changed and who to ask, though it's never a substitute for a lawyer or accountant.
  6. Something that lasts after you leave. A chat and a network you can still use from Lisbon or Melbourne.

Setting yourself up as a builder in Bali

Each of these has its own guide. We don't give visa, tax or legal advice, so the guides link to their sources and you should confirm anything that matters with a professional.

Is Bali the right base for your business?

It depends on what you're building and who you sell to. Bali runs on WITA (UTC+8), which suits customers in Asia and Australia better than the Americas. If you're weighing it up against other bases, our comparisons look at each from a founder's point of view:

Your first two weeks as a builder

  1. Sign up at /join before you land so you're in the chat on day one.
  2. Go to How I AI on Wednesday. Go again the next Wednesday.
  3. Work from a coworking space a few days a week rather than your villa.
  4. Go to the next monthly dinner (Thursday 12 November 2026 at Yema Kitchen, Canggu, 6:30pm, per the event page).
  5. Post one specific ask in the chat: a question, an intro you need, or feedback on something you've shipped.

FAQ

Is there a digital nomad community in Bali for entrepreneurs?

Yes. Beyond the social nomad chats, Bali has in-person builder communities: BSTC in Canggu (weekly How I AI nights and a roughly monthly founder dinner), GDG Bali for developers in Denpasar, and the Ubud Tech Meetup. See our directory for each group's last dated event.

What's the difference between a nomad group and a founder community?

Nomad groups are mostly social chats for housing, transport and meetups. Founder and builder communities meet on a schedule and talk about building: customers, pricing, hiring and tools. Most people building a business in Bali use both.

Where do digital nomads who run businesses meet in Canggu?

At scheduled builder events and in coworking spaces. In late 2026, BSTC's How I AI runs every Wednesday from 4 November to 9 December, 6 to 9pm at Seoul Soul Project, and BWork lists community events on its own calendar.

Do I need a special visa to work on my business from Bali?

We don't give visa advice. Our visa guide covers the main options with sources, and you should confirm your situation with a qualified immigration adviser before you rely on it.

Is Canggu or Ubud better for builders?

Canggu has the weekly builder events, and Finns' guide (updated 21 July 2026) lists 15 coworking spaces in and around it (Finns). Ubud has its own monthly tech meetup. The Canggu neighbourhood guide goes deeper.
